I wish to go to Lapland where there is snow everyday

A wish for snow…every day!

Five-year-old George lives in Worcestershire with his mum, dad and little brother. He loves football, and is a confident, bright boy, who is sometimes a little bit stubborn! George wished to visit meet Santa and go somewhere where it snows every day. His wish came true when he visited Lapland at Christmas in 2018.

Double dose of disaster

Just five months after his mum, Vici, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, tests confirmed that her son had leukaemia. Vici was in and out of hospital for chemotherapy and surgery herself, when George had to start his own course of chemo, steroids and lumbar punctures. George must go into hospital for days at a time whenever he gets a temperature, making it difficult to plan trips away from home or birthday parties or holidays.

A Christmas wish

To offer some respite from the cycle of hospitals and medicine, one of George’s nurses referred him for a wish, and he told the wish visitors who came to see him at home that he’d like to go somewhere where it snows every day! George’s mum, Vici, told us how they got on in Lapland:

Totally carefree

“It was brilliant. The whole thing. In Lapland, we were totally carefree. I look back and think ‘I can’t believe that really happened!’

Getting into the Christmas spirit

“It was the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit. Home life is so busy with medical appointments and school but there it was just us and we felt just like a normal family.

Pure joy

“We didn’t have a care in the world, no sense of time passing, just laughing and throwing themselves in the snow. It was pure joy. George has never seen that much snow, never been on a plane, and never stayed in a hotel, so it was a lot for him to take in.

Playing in the snow

“It was like the wilderness, like Narnia! We loved the husky ride through the forest, the tobogganing and the snowmobiles, and the mystical sound of the bells on the reindeer ride was the only thing you could hear in the still white snow.

Lasting memories

“George says his favourite part was throwing snowballs and just laying in the snow. We bought a Christmas tree decoration as a souvenir to remind us every year of George’s wish.

Going for it

“If you’re wondering whether to apply for a wish for a child, just do it! We felt unsure because we didn’t want to take charity, but these wishes are for the children. George’s wish was for George, and he deserves it.

Inside George’s imagination

"The wish visitors made it so interesting for him to choose his wish, and they made the process so much fun. We all sat down together as a family. It’s so interesting to hear what your child has to say. Ordinarily, you don’t get that chance as a parent, to ask your child, 'if you could have anything, or go anywhere, what would you choose?' So it was really lovely to see inside George’s imagination. We would never have known he wanted it to snow everyday. It was such a lovely process. We just felt like this was his reward. We can do nice things for him, but this was something else entirely."

Giving back

“We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity. It was such a gift. George’s school has raised a few hundred pounds for Make-A-Wish now, and when March 2020 finally rolls around, George will be having an end of treatment party and there will be Make-A-Wish donation buckets there! George wants a limo and to drink coke!”

Thank you for making George’s wish a reality.
