I wish to go to Pompeii and see the Roman ruins

Maddy wished to see the Roman ruins at Pompeii. Sadly, Maddy was unable to travel to Rome, so instead went to the Harry Potter studios with her family.

13-year-old Maddy lives with her parents and three sisters (including her twin) in Beaconsfield. She wished to visit the Roman ruins of Pompeii, but very sadly, as her wish date got closer, Maddy became more poorly and was unable to travel to Rome. Wishgranter Amy knew it was important that Maddy didn’t lose out on the wish that she had been looking forward to for so long, so she helped Maddy to choose a new wish.

In May 2018, Maddy visited the Harry Potter studios with her family.

Doctors found a large tumour on Maddy’s kidney when she was 12 and diagnosed her with metastatic Wilms tumour, a type of childhood kidney cancer.

As they tried to fight the disease in Maddy’s body with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, scans and tests, her usually bouncy, energetic personality was lost. She spent her birthday in hospital, dropped to 26 kilos in weight and her long hair all fell out.

Before the wish, Maddy’s mum, Victoria, told us, “To begin with, it’s absolutely terrifying. Then the worry sets in – how will I keep everything afloat for the other children? It’s been heart-wrenching to see Maddy so sick, especially for her twin sister. We are fortunate she is such a positive child.”

Victoria continued, “I’m so proud of the way Maddy has maintained her friendships and kept going in school. Even though she doesn’t like going in for chemo because it makes her feel so ill, she never fusses. She’s grown up a lot since the diagnosis.

"We turned to Make-A-Wish to recognise everything that she has dealt with, and to make up for all those times that that we’ve missed out on as a family while this has been going on. Planning her wish has been such a positive thing for Maddy,” Victoria adds, “It’s given her something to look forward to after so much uncertainty.”

After the wish, Maddy’s mum wrote a letter to Wishgranter Amy;

Dear Amy

Thank you for organising a wonderful day for Maddy and the rest of the family.

Maddy had a huge smile on her face from the moment we left the house. Edmund, our limo driver, was charming throughout and made the girls feel at home. The girls loved travelling in a limo.

The Harry Potter Studios were amazing, there was so much to see.. Maddy had a really lovely time looking at everything and taking loads of photos on her phone. She loved the gifts that the Warner brothers staff had picked out for her.

Maddy ate the most enormous dinner at her favourite restaurant after the trip. It was wonderful to see her having so much fun on such a fantastic day.

It was all simply perfect, thank you so much.

Victoria, Justin, Belle, Hatty, Maddy and Lottie”
